Lord of the Sword (SMS) Walkthrough v1.1 1/1/2001 By TDG (heyTDG@hotmail.com) http://tdg.vintagegaming.com This walkthrough/FAQ is my original work. It should only be found at... http://tdg.vintagegaming.com as well as... Some may prefer to do this, while others might find avoiding the battles associated with all of the extra ground that must be covered to be the better choice. Added more detail to explanations throughout document. Fixed a couple of typos. 1.0 First draft of walkthrough. _______________________ KEY TECHNIQUES ________________________ Each time you have the opportunity to speak with a character, talk with the character several times in succession in order to get all possible messages. If you do not get all possible messages, bosses and secret paths in the game will not appear. If something doesn't appear for you, you most likely need to speak with a character, or speak with a character additional times. A great bonus is that you can gradually recover your life meter by doing this! So, anywhere in this document that I instruct you to interact with any character, make sure to do it at least three times. And any time that you pass by a village or other point of interest, make sure to always interact. If you push forward while doing sword attacks, you will be able to attack with extremely rapid frequency! This works with standing attacks and crouching attacks (down + forward on the D-pad). Using this technique is very helpful against the tough bosses you'll encounter! Use arrows on those pesky birds that fly across the screen and then attack on their return. Have your bow ready to fire (hold the button) before the bird is on the attack. The standing sword slash has a surprisingly large zone of effectiveness. _____________________________ MAP ____________________________ (1)-F-C \ n-U-S-M-o-M-R-M p-U-C-C-M \ (/) M-F-M-(2)m (/) (2)-M-R-C \ (/) (\) \ (/) k-F M-C-l \ (/) \ / e-F-M-f-M-C-F M-F-R-g-M-h(-)M-S-i(-)I-M-j \ \ a-C-M-b-M-(1)F-c-F-M-d *************** LEGEND **************** BATTLEGROUND TYPES (UPPERCASE LETTERS) --------------------------------------- C = Cave F = Forest I = Island M = Mountains R = River S = Swamp U = Underground AREAS OF IMPORTANCE (LOWERCASE LETTERS) --------------------------------------- a = Medusa i = Pirate b = Harfoot j = Castle Elder c = Amon k = Ulmo Forest d = Castle Varlin l = Mount Morgos e = Tree Spirit m = Shaggart f = Pharazon n = Swamp Spirit g = Dwarle o = Ithile h = Lindon p = Dark Suma ANYTHING IN PARENTHESES ( ) IS A SECRET PATH/AREA THAT MUST BE EARNED (1) Shortcut to forest outside of Amon (2) Shaggart shortcut ______________________ WALKTHROUGH STEPS _____________________ THESE MUST BE DONE IN ORDER OR BOSSES AND SECRET PATHS WILL NOT APPEAR! You'll begin at Harfoot. Go to Amon and talk to the Wizard. You'll receive the book that a certain enemy will always try to steal. Don't let that happen! The book will be needed later on, so don't get too curious about it just yet. Go to the Ulmo Forest and talk to the talk numerous times. Then travel to the Tree Spirit. The best stategy against this boss is to stay a managable distance away and use your bow. Defeat him and you'll get the leaf. Go to Ithile and make sure to talk to the villager. Then travel to the Swamp Spirit and battle him. Fend off his ninjas with standing sword attacks, then shoot arrows into his mirror when it is exposed. Upon his defeat, return to Ithile and you will be rewarded with the Bow of Bravery. Visit the Wizard. Then travel to Dwarle and visit the villagers, and do the same at Lindon. If you have spoken with everyone necessary, a new route to the right of Lindon will open. Travel right to battle the Pirate. Stay in the water, walking under the island to nearly the right edge of the screen. The Pirate should walk right along with you, and having him do this will help you avoid getting booted off the island when you actually begin fighting. Now jump up onto the island and begin attacking the Pirate with very fast sword attacks. After defeating him, you'll meet up with the mayor's daughter. At this point, you can continue right and arrive at Castle Elder to challenge five bosses for the herbs, or go to Mount Morgos to challenge the Fire Beast in order to gain a more powerful sword. If you want to fight the five bosses, keep reading. If you want to get the sword, skip the next paragraph for now. The first boss at Castle Elder is a swordsman, who can best be beaten with standing sword attacks. The hammer-wielding second boss can be pushed back with arrows, but is only vulnerable to your sword. Try to "juggle" him with standing sword attacks. The third boss is a strange kicking enemy. Trap him in the left part of the screen and use your sword. A jester is the fourth boss. He will approach you from both directions. Pick a side of the screen. When he approaches your side, run and jump over him. He will start flipping--at this point, get behind when you expect him to land, and just after he lands, attack with your sword. He will return a successful hit will a projectile attack, so jump it. Done successfully, you will not be hit by the jester using this strategy. The fifth boss is a knight atop a horse. To beat him, jump, and on your descent, slash your sword as the knight approaches. If you defeat all of these bosses, you will receive the herbs. Visit Dwarle on your way to Mount Morgos. Here you'll fight the Fire Beast, a very tough boss that is best beaten using lots of bow attacks, combined with skillful forward leaps to dodge his fireballs. Win, and you'll burn the book. Now return to Amon to talk to the Wizard to receive the Luna Sword. Finally he can stop berating you about that book thing! If you haven't beaten the five bosses at Castle Elder, you should next refer to the paragraph above. Otherwise, keep reading. Travel to Medusa, who will battle you now that you have the herbs. She is simple to beat with sword attacks. Go back to speak with the Wizard, then go to Castle Varlin to talk to that Wizard. Your next destination is Pharazon, but talk to the Wizard in Amon again on your way. From Pharazon, a new path to the upper-right will appear. Ascend it and take the lower path at the end of first cave to find Dark Suma's temple. Make your way through the temple to find Dark Suma. To defeat him, get rid of the skulls as soon as you can, then fire arrows as fast as possible when he attempts to attack you. You should make short work of him. Don't take the sword he leaves behind, because it is weaker! It's a tough jump to avoid this undesirable weapon, but very important to do so. After this battle, take shortcut (1) to Amon, and talk to the Wizard. Next, go to Castle Varlin and talk to that Wizard. Make your way back to Pharazon and talk to the villager. He will speak of the mayor's daughter. Travel to Dwarle, visit, and then go to Lindon, where the mayor's daughter will tell you to take the Shaggart shortcut (2). Follow it to Shaggart, where instead of meeting a villager, you will enter Ra-Goan's temple. At the end of the first hallway is the Foe-Slayer Arrow. Make your way through this temple to face Ra-Goan. Beat him by first impeding his attack plan with constant bow attacks. When you pull him near enough to you, attack with your sword. Repeat these steps until he is defeated. Now make your way out of the temple and travel to Castle Varlin, where you will be made king. Enjoy the ending!
